Blessed

Updated: Apr 1, 2019

When many people are asked what they want out of life they say “I just want to be happy”. Maybe you’ve said the same thing.

In the Bible the word blessed is synonymous with happiness. If you think about it, we all spend most of our lives based on looking for happiness. Happiness is even the basis of our Australian National anthem: “Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free”. Although being blessed and happy is something given to us by God, we don’t experience it enough.

Happiness has become so hard to find that we have come to believe and expect that it is unattainable. Because we are miserable, we make others feel guilty when they are happy or satisfied. But the person who is stable and established in God is happy. They are the ones who have found God’s wisdom and understanding (Prov. 3:13). They despise sin but have mercy on the poor (Prov. 14:21). They handle matters wisely and trust in the lord (Prov. 16:20). They are fruitful and multiply (Ps. 127:5). They eat the fruit of their labour, and all goes well with them (Ps. 128:2). Their hope is in the Lord (Ps. 146:5). They keep the law of God and the law of the land (Prov. 29:18). They are the ones who the Lord has saved. He is their shield and their sword (Deut. 33:29).

So what we see here is that being happy and having a blessed life comes down to our position in God. When we are in line with God, we are at peace with Him. We have come into agreement with Him, concerning the way he has designed us to live. This is what it means to be in covenant with God. We remain in agreement with God’s plan for our life, therefore we are blessed, happy, satisfied, and content.
